Disney gets all the attention. And look — it's iconic, it's fun, and yes, we've all been. But if you actually live in Northeast Florida, you know the best days don't involve a theme park ticket, a three-hour line, or a $20 bottle of water.
One of the things I love most about Ponte Vedra is where it puts you. You're close enough to everything — the coast, the history, the wild and unexpected corners of this state — but your everyday life never feels like you're in the middle of the chaos. And when you do want to get out and explore? The options are genuinely remarkable.
Here are six day trips I recommend to every family who moves here — and the ones I keep coming back to myself.
About an hour north, but it feels like a world away. Historic Fernandina Beach, stunning coastal scenery, great food, and a pace that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Walk Centre Street, grab lunch at a waterfront spot, and let the afternoon stretch out. This is one of those trips where you'll find yourself already planning the next one on the drive home.
Take the ferry from St. Marys, Georgia — just about an hour and a half from Ponte Vedra — and step onto one of the most untouched barrier islands on the entire East Coast. Wild horses roam freely. There are no cars. No crowds. Just nature, history, and one of the most quietly beautiful places you'll ever visit. Book your ferry tickets in advance — this one fills up.
The kids will talk about this one for weeks. Florida's wild side — gators, cypress trees, and open water — all from an airboat. It's a completely different side of the state, and so much fun. About two hours from Ponte Vedra, it's an easy there-and-back with a whole lot of memories packed in between.
A lazy float through one of Florida's most beautiful natural springs. Bring (or rent) a tube, pack a cooler, and plan to stay all day. This is the Florida that doesn't make the brochures — and that's exactly why it's special.
One of the most underrated gems on the entire First Coast. Formal gardens, ancient oaks, and a coquina rock beach unlike anything else in Florida. Go in the morning when it's quiet. It's the kind of place that surprises people every time — and one you'll want to come back to with out-of-town guests.
A free ferry ride takes you to a 1700s Spanish fort sitting at the edge of the Matanzas River. Fascinating history, beautiful scenery, and it's completely free to visit. One of the best kept secrets near St. Augustine — pair it with lunch downtown and you've got a perfect Saturday.
The day trips are just the beginning. If you're thinking about making Northeast Florida home, I'd love to show you around.
